CENTURY-OLD BALETE IN STA. ANA, MANILA RECOGNIZED
century-old balete tree inside the Lichauco family’s residence in Sta. Ana, Manila was recently declared a Heritage Tree by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). On hand to unveil the heritage tree marker are DENR Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje (center), DENR-National Capital Region Executive Director Neria Andin (left) and Ms. Sylvia Lichauco-de Leon, president of Lola Grande Foundation and daughter of Mrs. Lichauco. Andin explains that due to rapid urbanization, mature trees are slowly vanishing from Metro Manila’s landscape, thus the Heritage Tree Project by DENR-NCR as part of its Urban Forestry Program. Trees declared as Heritage Trees could not be cut without prior approval from the DENR, according to Andin.
